Barbacarlo 2014 Lino Maga
Barbacarlo 2014 is a Lombard wine produced with Croatina, Uva Rara and Ughetta grapes in the hills of Oltrepò Pavese by Lino Maga, a true and authentic character, a farmer of the past who is very attached to his land.
Barbacarlo changes year after year, its beauty lies precisely in this, each vintage is different and tells a different story. It is the result of a blend of three different grape varieties, Croatina, Uva Rara and Ughetta, grown in the cru of the same name, named after Uncle Carlo (in Pavia dialect, uncle is called barba), from centuries-old vines with very low yields. The land on which they stand is characterised by a steep slope, which makes mechanical intervention impossible. No synthetic products are used in the vineyard or in the cellar. After the harvest, the grapes are fermented in old oak and chestnut barrels with no added yeasts and no temperature control. It is bottled when fermentation is not yet completed and very often, but not always, it re-ferments in the bottle, enriching itself with a particular carbonic note.
Barbacarlo Maga is a changeable wine and not easy to interpret, it tends to be a beautiful intense garnet red with some natural particles in suspension due to the absence of filtration and clarification, the nose comes out the country verve, with hints of stables that are intertwined with ripe red fruits and spices. In the mouth it is juicy with a slight carbonic hue and a long, savoury finish.
The characteristics of the vintage can be found on a neckband attached to each bottle, which tells its history and special features. A wine to try at least once in a lifetime.
