Barolo Perno Riserva 2017 Elio Sandri
The Barolo Perno Riserva 2017 by Elio Sandri represents the essence of Piedmontese winemaking tradition, embodying both power and elegance in perfect harmony. Produced exclusively with Nebbiolo grapes from the Perno area in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba, this wine results from a manual harvest that ensures the selection of the best grapes.
The vineyards, situated on mid-slope terrains similar to the Grand Cru of Burgundy, are exposed to the southwest on the MGA Perno hill. These vineyards, cultivated on calcareous and clayey soils rich in blue marl from the Lequio formation, benefit from an ideal microclimate that contributes to the wine's complexity. The vines, older and with lower yields than those used for the standard Barolo, impart a deeper structure and greater aging potential to the wine.
Fermentation occurs in cement tanks using indigenous yeasts, with prolonged maceration to fully extract aromatic and tannic substances from the skins. Aging takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels for about 38 months, followed by an additional four years in smaller barrels. The wine is unfiltered, maintaining its authenticity and complexity.
From an organoleptic perspective, the Barolo Perno Riserva 2017 by Elio Sandri displays an intense ruby color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it offers a complex and layered bouquet of ripe red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, enriched with spicy notes of black pepper, cinnamon, and cloves, with subtle hints of leather, tobacco, and underbrush. On the palate, it is powerful and structured, with robust yet well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity. The aromatic persistence is long and enveloping, leaving a finish of ripe fruit and spices.
While already enjoyable, this Barolo has remarkable aging potential and can be stored for many years, during which it will further evolve, gaining additional complexity and refinement. It is a wine that fully reflects Elio Sandri's philosophy, aimed at preserving and enhancing local winemaking traditions, offering an unforgettable tasting experience.
