Boca 2017 Le Piane
The Piedmontese wine Boca of the company Le Piane is made from 85% Nebbiolo plus 15% Vespolina, as allowed by the production regulations. Vespolina is a difficult grape to cultivate but fundamental in the blend of this wine because it gives a great spiciness, softness and floral sweetness without covering the structure of Nebbiolo.
The grapes come from two vineyards: one on the Traversagna, in the commune of Prato Sesia, between 400 and 450 metres above sea level with vines that are about 30 years old (0.4 hectares), and the other on the Piane (Antonio Cerri's old vineyard) which is over 50 years old between 420 and 470 metres above sea level (0.3 hectares).
The minerality of the porphyry soils and the unique structure of the Nebbiolos come together in "Boca" to make a full-bodied and expressive wine. It has a garnet red colour to the eye, while the nose expresses scents of violets, ripe berries and pomegranate that fade into liquorice and tobacco. The taste is powerful but at the same time elegant, with a long sip and a bitter finish.
It is a wine suited to long ageing.
