Description

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2002 Domaine Bonneau du Martray

Domaine Bonneau du Martray's Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru is a legendary white wine from Burgundy, born of a unique and precious terroir. The Charlemagne climate, the historic heart of the appellation of the same name, lies on the western slope of the Corton hillside, giving the grapes a privileged sun exposure from mid-morning until sunset, a rare case in Burgundy. Air circulation favored by the nearby hills constantly ventilates the vineyard, preserving the freshness of the Chardonnay grapes.

The Bonneau du Martray vineyard winds from the top to the bottom of the hill, where a mosaic of different soils gives rise to grapes with different characteristics. The clays, silts, marls and limestones combine in varying thicknesses, creating three distinct zones: the plots at the top of the hill, at the foot of the forest, give the wine a crystalline character, with floral and citrus notes; those in the center of the hill structure the wine and give it softness; and finally, the plots at the bottom, richer in minerals, give power and depth. This complexity of terroir is perfectly reflected in the wine, which represents the most authentic essence of the Charlemagne climat.

In the winery, after light crushing of the grapes, pressing takes place, which allows gentle extraction of aromas. Fermentation takes place partly in new and partly in used French oak barrels. Each barrel is carefully followed until the first racking, when blending begins. The wine then matures on its fine lees for an entire winter. At the end of this period, it undergoes a second racking, to separate the last lees, and is transferred to stainless steel for two months to promote homogenization. Finally, bottling takes place during a waning phase of the moon.

The result is a precise wine, revealing on the nose the limestone minerality typical of the hilltop, along with hints of wet rock and a saline touch. On the palate, it opens with notes of dried fruit and hazelnut, then evolves toward a certain fullness, always kept fresh by beautiful acidity.

With low yields and a perfect balance between the three microclimates of the vineyard, this Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru expresses the elegance and classicism of the Charlemagne climat, combining the limestone minerality of the hilltop with the structure and depth of the heart of the vineyard, to the richness of the clay soils of the lower part. It is a complex, long-lived wine that requires patience to fully appreciate its finesse and facet.
