Faugères 2019 Domaine Léon Barral
Domaine Léon Barral's Faugères is a blend of indigenous Languedoc grape varieties, composed mainly of Carignan, Cinsault and Grenache Noir. The vines, some of which are up to 70 years old, grow on soils rich in slate and schist, in an area characterized by extraordinary biodiversity and an ideal climate for viticulture, with significant nighttime temperature swings that favor optimal grape development.
The vinification of Faugères is half whole cluster. The grapes are harvested by hand and 50% destemmed, followed by spontaneous fermentation and a 30-day maceration in 130 hl concrete tanks. After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wine ages on its fine lees in cement tanks for two years. This process gives the wine a unique softness and roundness, without the use of new barrels, thus preserving the purity and authenticity of the terroir.
The result is a wine of great breed and personality, with silky tannins and a velvety feel on the palate. On the nose, Faugères offers a complex and deep bouquet, with hints of wild flowers, berries and jams, enriched by intriguing spicy notes. In the mouth, it is structured and juicy, with well-ripened tannins and a long, fresh finish that invites one sip after another.
This red wine is perfect with meat or mushroom risottos, grilled meats and rich dishes such as duck breast in blueberry sauce, enhancing each pairing with its intensity and persistence.
