Morgon Côte Du Py Vieilles Vignes Cuvée Julia 2019 Domaine Anthony Thévenet
Anthony Thévenet, one of Beaujolais' emerging stars, has gained international fame for his art. The Côte du Py, a renowned hill, is composed mainly of impenetrable shale soils, sporting a striking array of hues from orange to teal. The low presence of topsoil gives the wines a compelling intensity, distinguishing them from their granite-based counterparts in Morgon. Anthony's vineyards adorn the southern slopes of the hill, enjoying a warm microclimate, which gives this special cuvée its distinctive character, appropriately named after his beloved daughter.
These low-yielding vines produce grapes of exceptional intensity, giving the wine a luxurious smoothness that hides the robust dark red fruit flavors. Suggestive hints of delicate blooms mingle between the layers of velvety fruit, gently embraced by a structure of light tannins, leading to a lively and refreshing finish.
In the production of this wine, ninety-year-old vines thrive on rocky soils of weathering granite. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand, undergoing carbonic maceration with whole bunches for 30 days, without the addition of sulphites or yeasts. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks for 10-15 days, followed by a complete malolactic fermentation. Subsequently, the wine matures elegantly for 6-7 months, remaining unaltered by clarification or filtration.
