Moulin A Vent 2019 Ophelie Dutraive
From half a hectare of organically grown vines at Moulin-à-Vent, Ophélie Dutraive produces a single cuvée for her personal project. Like her father and brother, Ophélie embraces a natural viticulture style, which includes carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts, minimal additions of sulphur, no clarification or flitration. Based on the brightness and depth of its inaugural cuvée, the future of this project is promising.
As Ophélie, Jean-Louis' daughter, explained, "In the winery, the decisions are all taken together, but my father's opinion is fundamental, because he has all the experience". Ophélie has always had a desire to experiment independently and gain experience from his mistakes, so in the 2019 vintage he started his own project from a rented 0.3 hectare plot of 100-120 year old vines in the lieu-dit of Les Métérées, in the Cru of Moulin-à-Vent.
The following year he planted another 0.2 hectare on well-rested land that had never been planted with vines or treated with chemicals. In the cellar, carbonic maceration is carried out with indigenous yeasts and only 15 mg/L of sulphur is added. The wine is aged in a combination of demi-muids and neutral barrels for seven months and undergoes no filtration or ageing. Ophélie's inaugural cuvée is a vibrant, nervous label that contains all the meatiness of a classic Moulin-à-Vent and the thirst-quenching fruit we expect from any Dutraive label.
