Nebbiolo d'Alba "Marne Brune" 2008 Fontanafredda
The Nebbiolo d'Alba "Marne Brune" by Fontanafredda hails from Biancardi, in the heart of Langhe, where vineyards grow on soils rich in Sant'Agata marl interspersed with Diano d'Alba sandstone, coarse sands, and clay. The vines, located at altitudes up to 280 meters above sea level with east and southeast exposure, are trained in the Guyot system at a density of 4,500 plants per hectare.
Harvested in early October, the wine is vinified by combining 50% de-stemmed, crushed must and 50% whole clusters. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures (24-28 °C) over 12-15 days, followed by another 4-5 days after pressing. Aging is primarily conducted in large Slavonian oak barrels for 6-10 months, with a small portion aged in terracotta amphorae to highlight soil characteristics. The wine is bottled and further refined for at least two months, achieving peak drinkability by the spring following harvest and continuing to evolve positively for 5-10 years.
In the glass, it initially displays fruity and spicy notes, later developing garnet hues with brick-colored reflections and aromas of dried flowers like roses and geraniums. The palate is deep, soft, and well-balanced, with vibrant tannins and a long, persistent finish.
This Nebbiolo pairs wonderfully with regional delicacies like Alba truffles and is perfect with meat dishes such as Piedmontese boiled meats or Argentine empanadas. It also shines alongside cured meats, medium-aged cheeses, and rich first courses like lasagna Bolognese.
