Australian wines By Farr
By Farr is an Australian winery located in Geelong, about 80 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, run by Gary Farr and his son Nick who produce limited quantities of wine from a single vineyard from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, considered some of Australia's best. Gary has also been named Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller Wine in 2020.
Farr's Chardonnays are balanced and elegant, made from a blend of grapes from different areas with different characteristics. The Pinot Noir is harvested by hand with whole cluster fermentation to enrich the aromatics, and is grown on a very special soil: The red soil of the Sangreal vineyard on limestone on which Pinot Noir vines grow that the Farrs believe have mutated since they were planted 20 years ago to suit their microclimate.
Although it is only 300 metres from Sangreal, the different conditions of the Farrside vineyard mean that it is harvested 10 to 12 days later. The Pinot Noirs "Tout Près" and "Sangreal" are fermented in wood and aged in Allier oak barrels, while "Farrside" and "RP" are vinified in stainless steel before aging in wood (also Allier).
