CASCINA DEGLI ULIVI
Cascina degli Ulivi, authentic wines from Piedmont
Cascina degli Ulivi is a winery located in Novi Ligure, in the province of Alessandria, on the border between Liguria and Piedmont. The winery was founded in 1977 by Stefano Bellotti, then 18 years old, who began this adventure by cultivating just 1 hectare of land with the help of his neighbour, and then took giant steps forward. From the outset, Stefano adopted organic farming principles and in 1984 he converted to biodynamic farming.
Today, in the 22 hectares of land he owns, about ten hectares are cultivated with vines and another ten or so are used for the rotational production of wheat and fodder. Cattle and small farmyard animals are also bred, and there is also an agritourism, where you can eat local specialities and taste the wines from the winery. All the wines produced by the winery have the 'triple A' mark and are Agrobiodynamic and Bios certified. Stefano Bellotti passed away a few years ago, but he is always remembered as a reference figure for the biodynamic movement and for his independence of thought, convinced of wanting to produce wines outside the schemes imposed by others. His wines, obtained by spontaneous fermentation without the use of sulphites, represent the true essence of a wine and its terroir.
Shortly before his death Stefano bought an old abandoned farmhouse with 2 hectares of surrounding vineyards, where Timorasso, a typical vine of this area of Piedmont, was planted. He dreamed of creating a large agricultural-educational project to spread, especially among young people, the culture and love of agriculture and viticulture. Among his most important labels are Filagnotti and Montemarino, Cascina degli Ulivi's two historic wines.
