CASTRUM ROCHE
Castrum Roche, the winery founded by Isacco Costamagna, is nestled in the heart of La Morra, a historically rich hamlet within the prestigious wine region of Barolo. In 2014, Isacco inherited his grandparents’ land, Gagliasso Enrico and Costamagna Luigi, two figures deeply connected to the area's winemaking tradition. Young and determined, Isacco planted his first vineyard while still attending the Enological School Umberto I in Alba, laying the foundation for what would become his life's passion.
With invaluable support from his great-uncle Baba Dotta, Isacco dedicated himself to cultivating the land, following the principles passed down by his ancestors. For the first few years, he delivered his grapes to Trediberri, but in 2021, after earning a degree in Viticulture and Enology from the University of Turin and following the heartbreaking loss of his grandfather Gigi, he took full control of his destiny and produced his first wine: Langhe Nebbiolo.
The name Castrum Roche pays homage to the historic roots of La Morra, which was officially mentioned as "Castrum Roche" in 1477, meaning "castle on the rock." This choice perfectly captures the essence of the winery: a blend of history, tradition, and a forward-looking vision.
Isacco embraces a production philosophy rooted in respect for the land. His vineyards, now spanning 2.5 hectares, are cultivated without the use of herbicides or chemical pesticides, adhering to sustainable practices. In the cellar, his vision translates into a minimalist approach: the wine is made with indigenous yeasts and aged in stainless steel, allowing the terroir’s authenticity to shine through.
In 2022, with the expansion of the winery and the modernization of equipment, Castrum Roche is poised to release its first Barolo, which will be a pure expression of Torriglione. This terroir shares similarities with the famed Rocche dell’Annunziata, yet delivers wines with greater intensity and depth. Today, Isacco’s wines not only reflect the history and tradition of the region but also his youthful and innovative outlook on winemaking.
