Chiara Boschis is the heir to the historic Pira winery in Piedmont. Gigi Pira, a traditionalist winemaker, believed that the quality of the wines depended on the quality of the grapes, so he used the best grapes from the Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova vineyards for his bottles. Gigi's attachment to tradition was incredible, in fact he was the last remaining winemaker to carry out the crushing with his feet and all the production phases without the help of any machine.
In 1980 the business passed into the hands of Chiara Boschis, who grew up in her family's winery. After obtaining a degree in Economics from the University of Turin, Chiara decided to embark on a career as a winemaker, learning the trade from her father, with courage and passion in applying his revolutionary ideas about how to produce Barolo. Chiara's aim is in fact to produce elegant and drinkable Barolo, different from the typical austere style that characterises this wine, while remaining faithful to family traditions. The link with tradition can be seen in the spontaneous fermentation using only indigenous yeasts, and in the decision not to filter or clarify the wines. More modern and innovative choices are the separate vinification of each cru, in order to enhance the differences, and the use of barriques for ageing.
The main objective of this work is to give elegance, balance and expressiveness to Barolo and the great wines of the Langhe, which are traditionally very austere. Since 2010 Chiara has been joined by her brother Giorgio, who shares her great passion for work in the vineyard and in the cellar. The Pira E. & Figli Chiara Boschis winery, located in the commune of Barolo, comprises about 4 and a half hectares of vineyards distributed in some of the best areas of Barolo: Cannubi, Via Nuova and in those of Monforte d'Alba: Conterni, Mosconi, Ravera, and Le Coste.
