MARCO SARA

The Marco Sara winery is a perfect example of how it is possible to produce wines of great finesse while respecting the land and the environment through artisanal and sustainable practices. Founded in 2000 by Marco Sara, who took over the family estate, the winery has quickly become a reference point in the Colli Orientali del Friuli wine scene, an area particularly suited for the production of high-quality wines.

The estate is located in Savorgnano del Torre, in the coolest and westernmost part of the Colli, a region that enjoys a microclimate ideal for producing passito and botrytized wines. Marco Sara chose to focus on traditional varieties such as Picolit, Verduzzo, Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Schioppettino, and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, but also embraced experimentation with international varieties like Cabernet Franc, which has found the perfect habitat in Friuli to fully express itself.

The vineyards are located on steep, terraced hillsides, at altitudes ranging from 175 to 350 meters above sea level, where the vines benefit from the ponca (flysch), an eocene soil type composed of marl and sandstone that promotes high-quality viticulture. Marco is committed to respecting the natural balance of the land, adopting practices based on organic and biodynamic principles: no synthetic chemicals, but the use of autumn cover crops to revitalize the soil and promote biodiversity, ensuring a perfect balance between nature and human intervention.

The winemaking process is carried out using indigenous yeasts, in cement vats and wooden barrels, where the wines mature for months before bottling, ensuring thorough development and greater aromatic complexity.

The wines of Marco Sara are fresh, dynamic, and incredibly elegant, capable of telling the truth and authenticity of the Colli Orientali del Friuli. His Picolit is the emblem of this philosophy, a sweet wine made from botrytized grapes that marked the beginning of his winemaking journey. The Cabernet Franc ‘Frank’ is another of his flagship wines, a succulent and balsamic expression of a variety that has found a second home in Friuli.

Marco Sara is not just a wine producer but a custodian of the land and its traditions, patiently and passionately transforming the fruit of a generous nature into wines that speak of balance, authenticity, and sustainability.
