MASSA VECCHIA
The Massa Vecchia family-run company was founded in 1985 in the old historic village of Massa Marittima, on the slopes of the first Metalliffere hills of the Upper Maremma in Tuscany. Fabrizio Niccolaini was the founder of this young artisan reality, who decided to take back the historic family vineyard, the Querciola, planted by his father Alberto about ten years earlier, to which between 1992 and 1996 the two Beruzzo vineyards, purchased to meet the increased demand for the company's wines.
Helped by his wife Patrizia, Fabrizio embarks on this self-taught adventure, guided by a deep love for nature and the terroir. In 1992, his daughter Francesca led the company, helped by her parents, her husband and his partners. The principles that guide the company philosophy are as simple as possible, making wine without intervening on natural processes and preserving the integrity of the terroir.
So in the vineyard only powdered sulfur and Bordeaux mixture are used, while in the cellar the fermentations are exclusively spontaneous, and usually take place in open truncated cone-shaped vats with prolonged maceration to favor greater extraction from the fruit.
The Massa Vecchia winery is one of the most beautiful Italian artisan realities which, despite its young age, has carved out an important recognition for itself from lovers of natural wines in the world.
