"Gaio Gaio" 2021 Calabretta
The "Gaio Gaio" 2021 by Calabretta is a captivating red wine, born from the mineral and volcanic soils of the northern slopes of Mount Etna, where the winery is rooted. This unique terroir, composed of sands and volcanic stones, gives the grapes particular finesse and elegance, thanks also to the altitude of about 700 meters above sea level, which ensures a cool and breezy climate.
The grapes used for "Gaio Gaio" come from vineyards cultivated with the ancient bush training system, a tradition the Calabretta family has kept alive since the early 1900s. The vines grow in a rich biodiversity environment, surrounded by broom plants, prickly pears, and Mediterranean scrub bushes. In the vineyard, a sustainable philosophy is followed, using only sulfur and copper for plant care.
Harvesting is done manually, and the grapes are quickly brought to the winery to preserve their freshness. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in steel vats, using indigenous yeasts, with a maceration on the skins that lasts about a week. Subsequently, the wine matures in large barrels, a choice that softens the youthful tannins and preserves the fruit's fragrance, achieving a smooth and fresh drinkability.
In the glass, "Gaio Gaio" presents a bright ruby red color. On the nose, it offers an intense and complex bouquet: clear aromas of small red fruits, rose petals, notes of leather, and spicy nuances can be perceived. On the palate, it is a medium-bodied wine with a dynamic and fruity sip. The tannic texture is dense and fine, while the finish is characterized by a lively freshness and a savory and mineral accent.
