Saint Amour 2016 Descombes
Saint-Amour, located in the northern part of Beaujolais, is one of the smallest AOCs of Beaujolais, in terms of the proportion of vineyard area. Mostly Gamay varieties are grown here, and most of the vineyards are planted on hillsides facing south and east, on the banks of the Saone river.
Descombes' Saint-Amour 2016 is a naturally produced red wine that was only meant to be an experiment: the 2016 vintage was the first for this label and Descombes had no intention of producing it again, but the producer's followers fell in love with it after tasting it and Descombes decided to include this label in his production.
The Saint-Amour wines are among the lightest in Beaujolais, often exhibiting spicy berry and stone fruit characters with a distinct minerality. Georges Descombes' Saint Amour is one of the best examples of wine from this AOC, velvety and harmoniously balanced, with well-balanced acidity, soft tannins and a classic mineral expression.
The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with natural yeasts in a semi-carbonic cold maceration, in line with Beaujolais traditions. Precise, concentrated, elegant and sophisticated, it expresses fruity notes of cherries, strawberries and a hint of black olive on the nose. The sip is medium-bodied, with silky, refined tannins and good length.
