Saint-Joseph Blanc "Circa" 2022 J.L. Chave Selection
The Saint-Joseph Blanc "Circa" by Jean-Louis Chave is an enchanting wine that embodies the refined expression of the Saint-Joseph terroir. Made primarily from Roussanne grapes, this wine is a perfect example of the winemaking art of the renowned Domaine Jean-Louis Chave. Originally, starting from the mid-1990s, the grapes used for this wine were purchased from various growers. However, in 2009, the Domaine acquired Clos Florentin, a 4-hectare vineyard located in Mauves, at the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation, which now serves as the main source of grapes for this cuvée.
The Mauves terroir is characterized by granitic soils that impart a distinctive mineral structure to the wine. The Roussanne vines thrive in these conditions, absorbing the unique qualities of the soil and local microclimate. After harvesting, the grapes undergo a meticulous vinification process that adheres to the Domaine's traditional methods. The must ferments in wooden vats, and the wine ages for 12 months in the same containers, a technique that imparts complexity and depth to the final product.
The Saint-Joseph Blanc "Circa" presents itself with a brilliant, inviting golden-yellow color. On the nose, the wine is powerful and rich, with a symphony of aromas ranging from fresh fruit like pear and melon to more complex notes of fresh hazelnuts, acacia flowers, and ripe yellow fruit. These scents further evolve, revealing spicy and mineral nuances that add an intriguing and sophisticated dimension.
On the palate, the attack is smooth and enveloping, with a delicious body that showcases vibrant energy thanks to a fine tension that extends the wine's persistence. The floral and fruity notes from the nose are amplified on the palate, accompanied by hints of citrus and touches of ginger, which provide freshness and a spicy kick. The minerality of the Mauves terroir emerges elegantly, perfectly balancing the wine's aromatic richness and giving it a harmonious structure.
