Volnay 1er Cru "Les Angles" 2019 Domaine Louis Boillot
The Volnay 1er Cru "Les Angles" from Domaine Louis Boillot represents a superb expression of Pinot Noir, set in the heart of Burgundy. Louis Boillot hails from a long line of winemakers historically established in Volnay. Initially working with his father and brother at Domaine Lucien Boillot, Louis ventured out on his own in 2003, vinifying his own wines in Chambolle-Musigny alongside his wife, Ghislaine Barthod. Since 2019, his son Clément has gradually taken the torch, steering the wines towards greater fruit purity and better-integrated tannins, offering earlier drinkability where the terroir expresses itself freely.
The Volnay 1er Cru "Les Angles" is made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes grown on a 0.54-hectare plot, planted in 1961. These vineyards are located in privileged positions on both the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits, benefiting from exceptional terroir. The soil is rich in minerals, imparting extraordinary complexity and depth to the wine.
The vinification of this Volnay 1er Cru is characterized by an artisanal and traditional approach. The grapes are handpicked and fermented with indigenous yeasts, encouraging a natural fermentation that enhances the unique characteristics of the terroir. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, with a small percentage of new barrels to add complexity without overwhelming the fruit character of the wine. The wine is then bottled without clarification or filtration, preserving all its purity and authenticity.
The Volnay 1er Cru "Les Angles" presents a dark purple color, vibrant to the rim of the glass. On the nose, it offers an enchanting bouquet of violets, redcurrants, cherries, and with age, spices, game, and cooked prunes. These complex and concentrated aromas are expressed in a delicate and nuanced manner.
On the palate, the wine is fresh on the attack and warm on the finish, with a sensation of biting into the fruit and breathing in its flesh. Notes of morello cherry and blackcurrant are enriched by layers of black fruits, such as black cherries and blackcurrants, accompanied by a mineral component. The structure is balanced and the tannins are soft and well-integrated, giving the wine remarkable elegance. The finish is long and intense, with grilled and toasted nuances that leave a lasting impression.
